Die Stücke der Windrose

The Colón Theatre Experimental Center organized the Kagel Festival in homage to the argentinian composer Mauricio Kagel.
Contemporary choreographers and film makers were gathered to create eight dance films based on the pieces of Die Stücke der Windrose. During July 2006 the orchestra directed by Marcelo Delgado executed the complete piece live at Margarita Xirgu Theatre while the films were shown.

Südwesten
1992-93

In this piece - a composition commissioned by the Kyoto International Contemporary Music Forum and the Goethe-Institute Tokyo - my trip begins in the western coast of Mexico and ends in New Zealand. The Society Islands and Fiji, Western Samoa, New Caledonia and Tuvalu lie along this route. It is these regions, misterious in their music, that specially attract me because I still don´t know them personally. Yet another reason to turn into music my fascination for far away things.

It is in the percussion instruments in particular that one finds the characteristic sounds of the region: slit drums, log drums, conch trumpet, tam tam, gongs, bull roarer and angklungs, as well as sounds produced by other instruments hard to describe. It´s about being inspired by this region to write a new transcription. The listener will be the one to judge if this has been successful enough to set his mind in motion.
